BRIEF HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF NUT

What is known today as Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) started in 1925, when it was then called the Lagos Union of Teachers (LUT). In 1926, it metamorphosed into the Association of Headmasters of Ijebu Schools (AHIS). Then, its membership consisted mainly of principals of voluntary and grant-aided schools known then as Headmasters.

As a result of the very strong need to fight a common cause which included discrimination and other unfavourable conditions of service prevailing at that time the need to form a formidable body became necessary.

Therefore, on 8th July, 1931 the Nigeria Union of Teachers was formed at CMS Grammar School, Lagos.

The Major objective was and is still to protect teacher’s rights, oppose measures that are inimical to their interest etc.

The NUT today is therefore a symbol of professionalism and pursues Trade Union objectives. Similarly, the evolution of the Nigeria Union of Teachers Niger State Wing can be traced to the creation of Niger State out of the old North West region in 1976. In 1978, teachers from primary and post primary schools in the State came together in Minna to join the Union.

Today, NUT Niger State wing is a model in the establishment of the following projects, Teachers Social Security Scheme (ENDWELL), Ultra-modern shopping complex, NUT Endwell Microfinance Bank, NUT Endwell Model Science School and construction of a befitting ultra-modern permanent teachers house (secretariat) NUT Niger State wing also facilitated the establishment of Teachers Endwell Multipurpose Cooperative societies in 25 Local Government areas of the state and Niger state Teacher Endwell Multipurpose Cooperative Union (NSTEMCU) Ltd.

ADMINISTRATIVE STRUCTURE OF NUT

The Nigeria Union of Teachers has the National body located at the National Head Office, Abuja, State Wing in each state of the federal Republic of Nigeria and the FCT Abuja. Each state Wing operates from the state level down to the grass root through Local Government Branch.

The NUT is governed by its constitution, Bye-laws and Standing order.

The policies and decisions of the Union are executed by two arms of the Union, i.e the political and Administrative arms. The political arm, are the officers elected at the quadrennial Conference of delegates who serve for a period of 4 years and for a maximum of 2 terms at both National, State and Local Government levels, while the Administrative arm are the career staff appointed by the Union in line with the terms and conditions stipulated in the Union establishment referred to as Staffs Conditions of service. Staff are not appointed for life as erroneously believed by some members, but rather grow in the service to the terminal point of retirement just as is the case with Federal, State and Local Government workers

The NUT Staff are also entitled to pensions and gratuities at the end of their service years.
